The late saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. was on the cutting edge of jazz's pop transformation in the 1980s. Along with guitarist George Benson, flugelhorn player Chuck Mangione, and others, Washington brought a commercial sensibility to the genre, and smooth jazz was born. This new style was quickly embraced by the general public, but dismissed by many jazz purists. Nonetheless, crossover jazz is here to stay, and Washington is one of its biggest practitioners.

Level 42 - Running In The Family (1987)

The peak of Level 42's pop music. Production on this album is flawless and the sounds from Lindup's keybaords are wonderful. "Lessons In Love," "Running In The Family," "Fashion Fever" and "To Be With You Again" groove in classic Level 42 style. "Children Say" and the bonus track, "Freedom Someday" are delightfuly poppy. The best track is "It's Over," a song about the heartbreak of a man who has fallen out of love and has tried everything to avoid breaking the heart of the woman who loves him. The emotion in this song is so genuine that it moves you. But that's what is so great about Level 42, you can relate to every song and the music is pure craftsmanship.

Level 42 - Pursuit of Accidents (1982)

Unlike that first album though the spare,dreamy style of that recording is replaced by a much more busier sound and more uptempo tunes,upping the ante on the funk and jazz ends."Weave Your Spell" is a great example of this style,starting out on the funkiest note possible and NOT GIVING IT UP for five minutes.The title track is one of those instrumentals that is actually very melodic and vocal and really gives all the musicians a chance to play together;it particularly illustrates what a great drummer Phil Gould is by keeping his sound big and creative but never showy or pyrotechnical,which tends to be a jazz-fusion drumming stereotype.The next three cuts "Last Chance","Are You Hearing What I Hear?" and "You Can't Blame Louis" find Level 42 mapping out the sound that would a few years later result in their big hits in the US;the ability to be jazzy,funky and contemporary all at the same time and each are terrific examples."Eyes Waterfalling" and "The Chinese Way" return to the same spastic funkiness that begins this album and find Mark King further innovations in perfecting the use of the bass guitar.'Pursuit Of Accidents' is definately one of those sophmore albums that represent a huge artistic step forward rather then musical stagnation.This is highly recommended.

Level 42 - Superhits (2007)

This British Group was formed in 1980 as a jazz-funk fusion band. For 2 decades, they have been successful with so many hits that top the chart. Mark King's slap bass techniques that usually became the rhythm and groove basis for the songs, and the falsetto from Mark Lindup, are always the main attraction for them, the trademark of Level 42. I don't have to talk about how good their songs are, i just have to talk about the tracklist of their best albums. I've noticed their best albums were never complete. There's always 1 or 2 hits is missing. So, me and my friend bocah decided to make our own compilation, where we put ALL of their hits, including Guaranteed and Three Words (this one, as far as i remember, is never placed in any best album, and quite rare..). So, I hope you enjoy our presentation and have fun with the originality and greatness of Level 42.

Level 42 - Guaranteed (1992)

"Guaranteed" is definitely on some other level, 42 or otherwise,maybe higher. The songs are great, they are varied, they show superior talent and musicianship, drive, creativity, and more. My two favorite songs on the album are the intense rocker, track 5, "Set Me Up." It
amazes me that a group that generally follows the rock/funk/jazz formula can turn it on in such an intense way. Very infectious chunky bass everywhere. If by some fluke you are a Level 42 fan who has never heard this album, you will be blown away!

Kool and the Gang COMBO POST

Formed as a jazz ensemble in the mid-'60s, Kool & the Gang became one of the most inspired and influential funk units during the '70s, and one of the most popular R&B groups of the '80s after their breakout hit "Celebration" in 1979. Just as funky as James Brown or Parliament (and sampled almost as frequently), Kool & the Gang relied on their jazz backgrounds and long friendship to form a tightly knit group with the interplay and improvisation of a jazz outfit, plus the energy and spark of a band with equal ties to soul, R&B, and funk.

The growing earthiness of soul inspired the Jazziacs to temper their jazz sensibilities with rhythms more akin to R&B, and the newly renamed Soul Town Band began playing clubs in Greenwich Village. After a mix-up with a club owner resulted in the group being billed Kool & the Flames, they moderated the title to Kool & the Gang and found a leg up with the tiny De-Lite Records. Three singles from their self-titled debut album hit the pop charts, and although the position wasn't incredibly high, Kool & the Gang became a quick success on the R&B charts.

VA - The Fabulous Baker Boys (OST)

An inspired casting gimmick, a wonderful mood, a grown-up love story--all this in The Fabulous Baker Boys, but the only thing anybody ever talks about is Michelle Pfeiffer on top of a piano. Granted, it's a showstopper: clad in a slinky dress, Pfeiffer rolls around on the Steinway while she purrs out a languid version of "Makin' Whoopee." Adding to the seductive vibe is the fact that she's not singing to the audience, but to the sullen piano player (Jeff Bridges) whose fancy she has captured. Bridges and his real-life brother, Beau, play two lounge entertainers whose act has grown stale; they're not above doing "Feelings" for the tourist crowd. They've hired songbird Pfeiffer (who does her own sexy singing) to spice up the routine, a strategy that pays off in spades. The three actors are terrific, with the fabulous Bridges boys playing neatly off their own sibling rhythms. Writer-director Steve Kloves captures the feel of second-rate Seattle clubs, and Dave Grusin's jazzy score keeps propelling the film forward. Grusin does an excellent job of arranging the score. He knows how to create a mood with the music he plays. In fact, when you listen to the second track, Welcome to the Road, it takes you to where Suzie, Frank & Jack are hitting the road to play a gig over New Year's Eve. Grusin has wonderful way of conveying a moment through music whether it is a very serious pivotal moment as in track 8, The Moment of Truth, or a frantic moment as in track 4, Shop Till You Drop. Grusin is awesome.

This one's really hard to find. It's the classic album that placed David Foster in the place he's at today. There are some notes about this album. The Best Of Me in this album sung by David alone, without Olivia Newton John, like the version we all are familiar of. Then, there's Love At Second Sight, duet with Vicki Moss, only appeared in this 1983 album. (later in 1985 when this album was re-released, i dont know why, this song was gone from the list). There are some classic instrumental songs in this album that would be hard to find anywhere else. Another note, after this album, some songs had other versions with new arrangement or new vocalists. So, this is a classic album, and you gotta have it. enjoy!

Minnie Riperton Discography (Some are very rare!)

There was a singer with amazing range of vocal that started her career long before Mariah Carey was even born. Minnie Riperton had the ability to execute trills, runs and other vocal acrobatics in whistle register. Minnie Riperton was capable to sing easily in an unbelievable five and a half-octave vocal range,but reportedly could access the seventh octave and played with it. Her Piccolo Coloratura Soprano voice type was just unbelievable. The only soul singer to rival her range is Mariah Carey, although singers like Rachelle Ferrell, Shanice Wilson, Chanté Moore, or Christina Aguilera have demonstrated Some of the techniques that made Minnie so popular.She was known to score her greatest commercial success with the memorable hits: Lovin’ You.

In 1976, at the age of twenty-eight, Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a radical mastectomy. In 1977 Riperton became the first black female to serve as spokesperson for the American Cancer Society and to receive the Society's Courage Award from then-President Jimmy Carter. On Thursday July 12, 1979, at the age of 31, Riperton lost her valiant struggle with cancer. She died peacefully in her husband's arms while listening to a recording of a song Stevie Wonder had written for her.

What set Minnie Riperton apart from many other singers capable of the whistle register is her ability to sound almost mechanical or instrumental, as well as her ability to clearly enunciate clearly well above Soprano High C. In You Take My Breath Away, She sounds almost like feedback on a microphone. In Here We Go, Minnie chirps the phrase Here We Go with Perfect diction, Despite the notes very lofty altitude. All her musical legacy is survived by her husband, son and daughter. The note at the bottom of her headstone described her perfectly. “Hers was a gift of love, a miracle of life, for all the world to see and hear forever.” She may gone to soon, but will never forgotten.

paris match (パリス・マッチ, Parisu Matchi) is a Japanese musical group formed in 1998 by composer/arranger Yosuke Sugiyama and lyricist Tai Furusawa with vocalist Mari Mizuno. They debuted in 2000 with the album volume one. The group's name is a homage to the British musical group The Style Council, whose album Café Bleu features a song titled "The Paris Match". Stylish, sophisticated, and very very smooth, Paris Match's mix of bossa, jazz, and blue-eyed soul is a favorite with Japan's cafe set.Definately japanese taste of acid at its finest. A must!

David Benoit - American Landscape

Long before his GRP days, when pianist David Benoit began adding electronics to his albums, he scored TV shows and recorded albums of acoustic piano and strings. Back then, he was known not so much for his playing but for his composing and arranging. On his first release for GRP, 1987's Freedom at Midnight, Benoit composed and arranged "Morning Sojourn," showcasing an articulate contemporary horn-and-string arrangement reminiscent of the symphony-meets-the-Wild-West style of his mentor, Dave Grusin. And though he has yet to do an entire album of piano and strings, Benoit consistently reminds us of his expertise in this area on a track or two of his recent albums. "A Personal Story" from 1997's American Landscape offers a good example.The CD contains soothing jazz piano music that is great for listening alone or when caught in traffic. Eden Atwood - This Is Always : Ballad Session (2004)

A fine interpreter of lyrics, Eden Atwood started off her jazz career with a series of excellent recordings for Concord. Raised in Montana, Atwood studied drama and musical theater at college but became interested in jazz, and at 19 she began singing locally. Although she worked as a model and an actress, Atwood has focused her attentions on singing. What's special about her is, she interpret songs in the simple way, but still with high standard. The songs appear smooth, relaxing and refreshing. Imagine yourself sitting in a jazz cafe, having the time of your life, accompanied by a beautiful lady singing on stage with piano and small band that play soft and smooth and full with sensitivity as a background..Eden Atwood will definately make your dream come true. So if you're into smooth jazz vocal in the way Jane Monheit does, this one will also be loved.

John Mayer

After a short-lived stint at the Berklee College of Music, where he had a "great learning experience, but not because of class," John Mayer set down roots in Atlanta, where his music career hit the ground running. After one year in Atlanta, he released his debut solo album, Inside Wants Out, in 1999. At the same time, he became a regular in the Atlanta club circuit, playing a steady stream of shows at venues like Eddie's Attic. An appearance in March 2000 at the South by Southwest Music Festival led to a recording contract with Aware Records, a subsidiary of Columbia. He began recording his major-label debut, Room for Squares, that fall with producer John Alagia, who had previously worked with artists like Dave Matthews and the Ben Folds Five.

Mayer's first album had been a decidedly acoustic effort; in contrast, Room for Squares featured a full electric band and showed the work of its producer with its funky hooks and an emphasis placed on Mayer's versatile, smooth voice, which bore more than just a stylistic resemblance to Dave Matthews. Columbia re-released Room for Squares in the summer of 2001, adding one bonus track, and also offered a very limited-edition two-CD set including a disc with two previously unreleased covers. Mayer's dedicated fan base grew substantially larger during his first cross-country tour to support the album, spawning a number of CD-R trading outlets through fan websites, as well as a successful live album, Any Given Thursday. Mayer's lucrative follow-up, 2004's Heavier Things, resulted in another Grammy, this time for Song of the Year. Looking to strip his sound down, he formed the John Mayer Trio with drummer Steve Jordan and bassist Pino Palladino. Their sold-out tour was documented on the 2005 release Try! One of the most significant pianists to emerge since the 1960s, Keith Jarrett maintained a career that went through several phases. He gained international fame for his solo concerts, which found him spontaneously improvising all of the music without any prior planning, but he also led a couple of dynamic quartets/quintets, performed classical music, and later played explorative versions of standards with his longtime trio. Although his tendency to "sing along" with his piano now and then is distracting, Jarrett continued to grow as a powerful improviser after decades of important accomplishments.

Upon leaving Miles Davis, Jarrett permanently swore off electric keyboards. He had cut sessions as a leader for Vortex (1967-1969) and Atlantic (1971), but starting in November 1971, he recorded extensively for ECM (in addition to some sessions in the 1970s for ABC/Impulse), an association that continued into the 2000s. In the 1970s, Jarrett led two groups: an exciting unit with Dewey Redman,Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, and occasional percussionists (often Guilherme Franco); and a European band with Jan Garbarek, Palle Danielsson, and Jon Christensen that recorded the popular "My Song." In addition, starting in 1972 Jarrett began his famous series of improvised concerts that resulted in such popular recordings as Solo Concerts, Köln Concert, and the mammoth Sun Bear Concerts. By the 1980s, Jarrett was performing classical music as much as jazz, but in the 1990s he recorded extensively (including a six-CD live set) with his "standards trio," which included Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette. Although initially influenced by Bill Evans, Jarrett has had an original and influential style of his own since the early '70s, and remains a vital force in jazz. ~ Scott Yanow,All Music Guide

Michael Franks (11 Albums)

Countless musical trends have steamrolled by since the mid '70s when this wry singer-songwriter first graced the adult-music world with his cryptic hit, "Popsicle Toes." Since then, Franks has stood his ground. On Barefoot on the Beach, he remains charmingly cool and collected; his voice, still wistful and onionskinned. And he has continued to grow as an observational lyricist.

Franks just doesn't buy into the top-40 school of "hook or forget it" songwriting. He's more interested in weaving quirky, esoteric images over solid grooves. (His backing music - Bob James, Dave Samuels, Chuck Loeb, Bob Mintzer - varies between classic, subtly brassy Steely Dan and colorful smooth-jazz vibes.) "You could jump a DC-8 and probably be here by eight" sets the tone for the frolic of the title track. Everything is fair game, from references to Ingrid Bergman and Rhett Butler on "Heart Like an Open Book" to congratulating Ponce de Leon for the youthful drive of his lover on "The Fountain of Youth."

He's quite the humorist, too. On "Double Talk," he tells a cheating mate, "Each time you lie, your profile grows... it looks just like Pinocchio's." "Mr. Smooth" is a crisp commentary on a stuck-up man. But even when Franks is expressing displeasure, his heart is light. He covers all the aspects of love from the supreme joy of "Now Love Has No End" to "Why Spring Ain't Here," but the minute he starts to boil over, he's back to the beach, having a blast. Jack Johnson (3 Albums)

Before Jack Johnson perfected his rock star ways, he was a champion surfer on the professional route, with a sponsorship with Quiksilver. It was a life that was second nature for the Hawaiian native, for he began chasing waves as a toddler, and by the time he was 17, he was an outstanding athlete on the pipeline. However, Johnson was also testing his other creative outlets -- one being film and the other being music.

It was during his college years as a film student at University of California at Santa Barbara when Johnson began writing songs. He and old mates Chris Malloy and Emmett Malloy produced a surf cinema documentary entitled Thicker Than Water, in turn spotlighting Johnson as a talented cinematographer as well as a burgeoning singer/songwriter. His peers in and around the surf circuit praised his work, and Thicker Than Water received props in Surfer magazine for Video of the Year during 2000. The follow-up surf flick The September Sessions also earned the Adobe Highlight Award at the ESPN Film Festival that same year.

Still, Johnson steered away from a blossoming pro sports career and stuck with music -- something that would soon earn him additional honors. G. Love & Special Sauce quickly took notice to Johnson's lazy blues stylings, which also molded folk and hip-hop for a modern rock twist, and included Johnson on "Rodeo Clowns" from G. Love's 1999 release Philadelphonic. Johnson's four-track demo also caught the ears of Ben Harper's right-hand man, J.P. Plunier. This was surely mind-blowing for Johnson, for Harper's college rock mainstay Fight for Your Mind was one of his favorites and remained an inspiration. Aside from Plunier's production work, Harper also added his lap steel guitar work on Johnson's sultry debut, Brushfire Fairytales (Enjoy Records), in winter 2001.

Vince Gill - These Days (4 CD Set)

These new recordings of mostly recent Gill compositions are the culmination of a project aimed at recording four distinct albums: rock, romance, vintage honky-tonk, and acoustic.

CD 1: The Rockin' Record, virtually perfect from start to finish, begins with "Workin' on a Big Chill," its swampy groove straight out of John Fogerty and a showcase for Gill's guitar virtuosity--a groove he resumes on "Cowboy Up," with cameo harmonies from Gretchen Wilson. "Sweet Thing" and a duet with Rodney Crowell on "Nothin' for a Broken Heart" pulsate with Chuck Berry intensity that contrasts with the solid, '60s Memphis groove of "Bet It All on You."

CD 2: The Reason Why showcases Gill's legendary ease with ballads, several of them enhanced by creative string arrangements by David Campbell (Beck's father), including "What You Don't Say" with LeAnn Rimes and "The Memory of You" with Trisha Yearwood. The stunning "Faint of Heart," a remarkably sultry jazz duet with Diana Krall, could become a standard.

CD 3: Some Things Never Get Old revisits classic fiddle-steel honky-tonk, music Gill has long reverenced and referenced. "This New Heartache" is straight out of Ray Price. Gill and Patty Loveless tear up "Out of My Mind" and Allison Krauss and Dan Tyminski join in for the waltz "I Can't Let Go." "Don't Pretend with Me" honors Ernest Tubb's honky-tonk primitivism.

CD 4: Little Brother, all-acoustic and often bluegrass-flavored, shines from beginning to end. Along with "Molly Brown," a stark cautionary about racial violence, Gill sings both "Cold Gray Light of Dawn" and "Give Me the Highway" with the Del McCoury Band. He and Guy Clark close it out with "Almost Home." Despite outstanding past efforts, Gill--one of the top hitmakers of the '90s--hasn't had a Top Ten single since 2000. No matter. His talents and the heart he puts into his writing, singing, and picking remain at their peak. This stellar collection proves it--four times over.

To accompany him on this ambitious undertaking, Gill turned both to artists he knew and had worked with before and to those whose music he admired at a distance. "I never try to fill up my records with famous people," Gill says. "I try to fill them up with the most talented people I can find on the face of the earth." By the time the project was completed, that group included Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Krall, Rodney Crowell, Phil Everly, the Del McCoury Band, Emmylou Harris, John Anderson, Lee Ann Womack, Jenny Gill, Amy Grant, LeAnn Rimes, Gretchen Wilson, Guy Clark, Trisha Yearwood, Bekka Bramlett, Michael McDonald, steel-guitar master Buddy Emmons and many other musical standouts.

Initially, Gill planned to pare down the songs he’d recorded to a single album. Then, in one of the studios he used, he spotted some Beatles memorabilia and recalled that the Fab Four had routinely released multiple albums within the same year.

George Howard's polished fusion of funk, jazz and urban soul helped the soprano saxophonist become one of the most popular contemporary jazz performers of the '80s and '90s. Since he concentrated on groove and overall sound instead of improvisation, Howard never received much attention from jazz critics, but he retained a large audience well into his second decade of performing.

Howard began his musical career in the late '70s. He received his first break when Grover Washington, Jr., one of his musical idols, invited him on a tour in 1979. The tour helped establish Howard's name, and in 1982 he released his debut album, Asphalt Garden, on Palo Alto. The record was a moderate hit, as was its follow-up, 1984's Steppin' Out. It wasn't until the 1985 release of Dancing in the Sun that Howard earned a large audience. The album reached number one on the contemporary jazz charts. Following the release of Dancing In the Sun, he moved to MCA, where he issued A Nice Place to Be, Reflections, Personal and Love Will Follow. All four records were considerable successes on the charts. In 1991, Howard signed to GRP, releasing his debut Love and Understanding that year. It was followed by Do I Ever Cross Your Mind in 1992 and When Summer Comes in 1993. A Home Far Away was released in 1994, and Attitude Adjustment was issued in 1996. All of his GRP recordings were quite successful, confirming his place among the most popular contemporary jazz performers of the '90s. His first five years with GRP, plus a selection of his MCA recordings, were summarized on 1997's The Very Best of George Howard. Howard returned to recording with Midnight Mood, which was released in January 1998.

Sadly, it was the last record he would release in his lifetime. He died unexpectedly March 29, 1998. A few months later, his last recording -- a version of Sly Stone's There's A Riot Goin' On, which was conceived as part of Blue Note's cover series -- was released. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Lyambiko - Selftitled

He's from Tanzania. Her late mother was from East Germany, which is where Lyambiko was born and grew up. Lyambiko's dad had studied engineering there. When she was growing up -- her mixed race background pegged her as exotic in East Germany, and it reflected too on the way she sing. It's just exotic. Her deep husky voice is just really perfect to interpret classic jazz songbook. You'll love this for real.

A rather strange compilation I must say.. I was surprised to see the variety of choices in one album. Imagine, Snow Rose, Astrud, Sarah Vaughan, Laura Fygi, Chiara Civello,Basia Tania Maria, even Monday Michiru, then there are Lee Ritenour, Ronnie Jordan, Kool and the Gang, Manhattan Transfer etc placed together. The funny thing is, with so many different genres, it's really nice to listen. This album is relaxing and pleasant to listen, that's why they put "Fresh" as the title I guess.. well, enjoy!

IRMA released another 2 great albums. not like their previous albums, they tried to offer new genre in these albums.
IRMA always released something more futuristic and modern, for example, more in electronic bossa, a bit of soulfulhouse and more uplifting musics and beats, however these albums are more funk, acid and groove compare to their usual albums.
but still they reflect the modernistic of IRMA itself.

Quincy Jones - Big Band Bossa

Let's go back in time. For the sake of history, and for the sake of ressurecting the cocktail party music style from 50-60's, this album is a must have.This is the album that maybe has forgotten. Back in 1962, when the young Quincy Jones was still playing piano at the orchestra, he discovered latin jazz and decided to do this album. Recruiting the finest player at that time, Paul Gonsalves (from Duke Ellington Big Band), Jim Hall, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Clark Terry, Jerome Richardson dan Lalo Schifrin, he made a simply unforgettable album. Not only he played the bossa standard such as Desafinado, Manha de Carnaval, One Note Samba atau No More Blues, he also wrote the famous "Soul Bossa Nova", that later became one of the theme of FIFA World Cup 1998, and got really famous by being Austin Powers' theme. If you think this one will be just like another bossa, you're wrong. Quincy is always quincy, with his creative style even from the old days. It's soothing, calm, and simply unforgettable. And yes, this is not an album you can find daily and everywhere. so.... enjoy. :)

a bit of review for this album...
It was released on March 3, 2008 so I can say that this album is fresh!
Dj Kawasaki mostly involves with the jazzy house tunez. He has been joining the Extra Freedom Labels for quite some time. This label also collaborates with Kyoto Jazz Massive and has been successfully releasing quite extraordinary albums.
I've been listening this album for the whole day today and I should say that this is what jazzy house should be!
I love the song titled You Can Make It, it is soulful and deep groovy, the house touch is just perfect. Tasita D'Amour's voice is just clear and inviting you to groove.
if you think that jazzy house is just another house music, YOU ARE SO WRONG!
this is the most soulful house tunes than any other House music that you usually hear in the club, and not just that.
even the lyric is just beautiful! The tunez thats not just inviting you to dance but also burn your spirit high!

Sergio Mendes & Brasil 77 - Home Cooking (1976)

What an oasis this album was for long-time Mendes fans when it came out, after the relatively barren Bell and early Elektra years. Sergio, working with a stellar rhythm section (including Wonderlove's Michael Sembello), and the superb vocals of Lise Miller, Marietta Waters and Bonnie Bowden, expertly delves into a "heavier" Latin sound (almost like Santana) while preserving the lighter Bossa Nova sound for which he justifiably became world-famous. And that all wrapped in delicious and infectious funk base rhythm. So basically that's what Mendes made in this abum. "If you smelll... what Mendes is cookin'..!

While in the real world we try to make milk getting more popular, replacing soft drinks, with many commercials like "Got Milk?", putting famous celebrities in the commercial to make milk look cool, making more flavors for milk, that's how in the jazz world too. For some people, jazz is complicated and old fashioned, not a music style that we could listen while hang out, this album is trying to break the gap. They want to introduce something new in the term of jazz that can be acceptable for everyone, where in the end, everyone can say.."hey, Jazz is cool"..

Finally, after 2 years in waiting, Sergio Mendes is back with a new album, Encanto.Encanto means Enchanted, or Charming, and that describe this album perfectly. Sergio once again repeat his winning formula, after his Timeless album went very successful 2 years ago. If the “earlier” generation knows Sergio Mendes as one of the bossa legend,now the younger generation, even the MTV generation can also enjoy Sergio songs. You’ll get Will I.Am and Fergie. There’s hispanic taste with Juanes, Afro French taste with Zap Mama, there’s also Siedah Garret, Ledisi, Jovanotti, Carlinhos Brown, and Sergio’s wife, the great Gracinha Leporache. What really surprise me is, Lani Hall is back! with her husband, Herb Alpert on vocal. Don’t forget and cool trumpet. A really joyful and pleasant surprise. For many years I wish sergio would get Lani back with him in any song or album, and now it happens.

This album is really amazing and solid. It touches many aspects of songs, and reached many fans across generations. An album can’t be made better than this. It’s really refreshing and geniously made.

Back to live, straight from the vintage collection from 1989. This is a classic Indonesian band that based on light fusion with latin jazz sound. Enjoyable and still nice to listen. Some songs were major radio hits at that time, Fatamorgana (mirage), Monica and Bawalah Daku (Bring Me). What's unique with this band is they were a three- pieces keyboard band. The improvisation and the sound of the keyboard resemblence eighties music. Enjoy!

The album title is a reference to Bluey’s musical evolution since his childhood on the small island of Mauritius. Accompanied by his newly-formed funk band, Harry explores a mind-boggling variety of styles on the album, from funky rockin' instrumentals to hushed ballads to esoteric recitations. Yet every song lies within the framework of the rootsy New Orleans style that comes so naturally to Harry Connick, Jr.

From the opening track, it's clear Harry set out to have fun, and songs like "Here Comes The Big Parade," the rapturous "She," "That Party," and the wry "To Love The Language" embody a boisterous spirit. "(I Could Only) Whisper Your Name," the album's first single, grooves with a full horn section, while "Trouble" is a sly spare dialogue between Harry on vocals and piano with the congas. Ballads like "Honestly Now (Safety's Just Danger…Out of Place)" ratchet down the mood, while the instrumentals, "Funky Dunky" and "Joe Slam and the Spaceship" prove raucous enough for a Mardi Gras parade. Harry closes the album by playing every instrument on the song "Booker", a tribute to one of his first piano teachers, the late New Orleans piano genius, James Booker.

This is just a great album, bringing jazz back to the roots, with a solid touch of New Orleans/Dixieland style, mixed with funk. A must have. Oh yeah, this album is hard to find nowadays.. enjoy!

This Batak native (one of tribe in Indonesia) started studying music when he was six years old. After studying classical piano and guitar into his teen years, he discovered his true love of new age and world music. He ditched his job in the family business and in 2002 began dedicating himself to music full time. In his last four albums, the multi-talented composer has created music inspired by the music of north Sumatra, the birthplace of his ancestors. He is driven to learn and experiment with Batak music and instruments while updating their sound with modern keyboards and electronics. He continues to collaborate with Batak musicians in his state of the art studio in Jakarta, where he hopes to produce other groups dedicated to promoting and modernizing the traditional sounds of Indonesia.

Lani Hall came into the spotlight and reached her stardom status since she began her career as Brasil 66's lead vocal, the project of Sergio Mendes. Her soft, sweet and mellow vocal was the life of Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66's songs, and successfully made some classics during their prime. In the early 70s, Lani choose to quit the band, and married Herb Alpert, the producer. Still, she made some albums, and the peak of her career as a solo singer came when she was selected to sing James Bond's theme, Never Say Never Again in 1983. Strangely, right after that she's gone from the music industry. In 1998, she came back with an album, that, too bad, couldn't rise her back to top.
It's rare these days to find her songs in her solo career (except James Bond's theme of course). She's made some great songs with her perfect soft voice. So.... here I share you 7 songs from Lani. Think about rare stuffs, with a quality that's more than enough for cassette rip, great love songs, I recommend you to have these. :)

And then, the old days, the legendary crooner with all the glorious career that he has reached. This Capitol period (1953-1961) shows how great Sinatra in his mature age. Many of the songs in here, maybe ,you haven't heard of, but i dare to say that there's no bad song from Sinatra. You can listen and enjoy each and every song of his, and they are all ageless. Sadao Watanabe (渡辺貞夫, Watanabe Sadao) is a world class saxophonist with career span from 1950s till now. He's still active and productive, with lots of tours everywhere in his 75 years of age. This is his best album back from 1992, and remastered in 2007. All his best mostly from 80s and 70s. Absolutely gorgeous album, very relaxing and smooth. Some fusion, some reggae-ish, bossa/samba, are here, but they are all in the term of smooth. Not available anywhere else at the moment on the internet... so grab this while it's still hot!

Jun Seba (せば　じゅん, Seba Jun?) is a Japanese hip-hop music producer and DJ who records under the name Nujabes. Nujabes is an anagram of his first name (Jun) and last name (Seba) spelled backwards and combined. Besides making music, he is also an owner of "T Records" and "Guinness Records" (both record stores in Shibuya, Tokyo), and runs Hyde-Out Productions. He has released four CD albums in Japan, Metaphorical Music in 2003, Modal Soul in 2005, also Hydeout Productions 1st and 2nd Collection. He has also contributed music to the soundtrack of Samurai Champloo, an anime which blends a feudal Japan setting with modern anachronisms, especially hip-hop music.

In the tradition of trip hop, a new genre that was born in the mid 90s, focusing on hip hop with jazz based music (usually sampling from other songs), or jazz techno music, Nujabes' albums are surely worth to listen to. As the summer's coming nearer, to make your summer holiday special, this is a compilation that could represent the summer celebration.. correct me if i'm wrong, but as far as i reckon, no one ever made a compilation album for annual brazilian carnaval. The magic moment, the majestical, the mystical and the strong magical power of carnaval is always an unforgettable moment. I've been to two carnavals so far in my life, now i want to share the moment with you all, with collections of song that will make you feel right there. :)

As usual, i've chosen the best song with clear and clean quality that could represent the carnaval celebration. Of course, this time, up beat samba rhythm is dominating this album, and also the lyrics, mostly represent carnaval. Festa Da Alegria, The Party of Happiness, Jubilation Party... the feeling will come to you right after you play this album in your stereos. He had only 9 years to fill the music world with his gifted talent, cuz just at 33 years of age, he passed away. Daniel Sahuleka - The Best

In the 1980s, Indonesian-born Dutchman Daniel Sahuleka was a big name on the pop scene here, and also the world with his distinctive, clear and eloquent voice winning the hearts of millions.

His all time classic love songs Don't Sleep Away the Night and You Make My World So Colorful were huge hits and are still aired on the radio today. This album is only distributed in Indonesia.

There's a bilingual version of Don't Sleep and the unplugged version of You Make My World So Colorful. There is also Imagine, a festive, Al Jarreau-esque number with percussion and brass sections and the sweet pop song The Sunlight. As much as he loves his homeland, there is Berdendang (Chanting), a joyful track using an instrumental called tifa, a traditional percussion instrument from ambon. Nice album, especially if any of you want to have a nostalgic moment with Daniel. Enjoy. :)

A Tribute to Miles is a tribute album by the rest of Miles' Quintet in 1964-1968, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams, Ron Carter. This was the tribute album to pay homage to the then recently departed mentor of the above men, Miles Davis who died in September 1991. Playing the part of Davis, was young trumpet player Wallace Roney. Just like how they were in the 60s, this tribute album still have it in post bop style.
Generally, the term post-bop is taken to mean jazz from the mid-sixties onward that assimilates influence from hard bop, modal jazz, the avant-garde, and free jazz. It's wild, it's delicious, it's free, it's amazing. This album won all five men a Grammy award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group. This marked Hancock's third overall Grammy award. Not suitable for easy listening lovers, but will be absolutely perfect for those who like complicative and free improvisation style of music. :)

Natalie Cole - Leavin'

With Leavin', her 20th studio album, Natalie Cole looks to be issuing a challenge to longtime listeners: if you're in, it's because you see stardust and are gripped by a warm sensation anytime her legendary voice eases through a speaker. If you're out, it's because you're not as musically adventurous as she is. Of the dozen songs here, only roughly a quarter could be cordoned off into classic R&B territory; the rest amount to an artful but decidedly pop-leaning hodgepodge. In addition to the opening track, a cover of Fiona Apple's "Criminal" that does away with the original's raw, angry edge in favor of flipness and sass, Cole gamely tackles Neil Young's classic "Old Man" and Kate Bush's "The Man With the Child in His Eyes." If those songs seem effortful, she finds more even footing on the title track, a Shelby Lynne original ready-made for a classic soul reworking, as well as on Aretha Franklin's "Day Dreaming," which benefits from producer Dallas Austin's addition of a hip hop-lite fringe. Unsurprisingly for an artist of Cole's depth and caliber, Leavin's sole original track, "5 Minutes Away," is its best. Here is Natalie as the world knows and loves her: a belter born to dose up the stirrings of her soul with unmatched tenderness and bottomless love. --Tammy La Gorce

Orange Pekoe - Grace

Orange Pekoe (オレンジ・ペコー, orenji pekō?, or orange pekoe) is a Japanese music duo which formed in 1998. The name came from a term mainly used to describe a grade of tea found in the grading system used for sorting black teas (Orange pekoe grading). It is composed of Kazuma Fujimoto, who plays guitar and does the composition, arrangement, and programming of the music, and Tomoko Nagashima, who writes the lyrics and performs vocals. Nagashima's register is alto, with impressive wavey voice, while Fujimoto's compositions basically draw strongly upon jazz. Still, as much as he loves bossa/samba, many of their song got influenced by this brazilian style of music as well.

This album shows how they are. Mainly served in jazz standard, we can also get couple of songs in bossa feel. Nagashima's vocals are velvety smooth and soulful while Fujimoto's guitar work is oh so tasteful, clean, and impeccable. Of course there is the rest of the band too - all incredibly capable musicians who provide the perfect musical scenery for the duo to work their magic.

If this is your first orange pekoe album, I think it will not be your last. Beautiful, inspiring and (perfect for cocktail parties!), "Grace" is a tour-de-force of modern j-jazz at its best. Enjoy!
