Siapa sih Grover sampai harus ada tribute segala? Grover Washington Jr ini termasuk salah satu pelopor sub genre smooth jazz. Grover ngetop disepanjang 1970 hingga 1980an. Gayanya yang kental dengan funk,soul dan RnB bikin karya2nya punya rasa yang khas. Dia ini jembatan antara funk dan smooth jazz. Salah satu artis yang sangat terpengaruh gaya permainan Grover Washington adalah David Sanborn. Grover juga jadi orang yang mengangkat nama2 spt Kenny G, Walter Beasley, Najee, Pamela Williams atau George Howard ke posisi atas musisi dunia. too bad, Grover tidak berumur panjang. Tahun 1999 ketika sedang rekaman untuk acara TV, Grover tiba2 pingsan dan akhirnya dinyatakan meninggal dunia akibat serangan jantung.

Album ini merupakan album tribute buat mengenang Grover. Isinya adalah segudang nama beken. Siapa aja? Natalie Cole bareng London Symphony Orchestra ngebawain lagu2 jazz standar nih.. aransemennya indah banget nih.. ketika banyak penyanyi mengutak atik lagu ketika didaur ulang sampai tuh lagu kadang udah berubah total, interpretasi Natalie sederhana dan setia dengan konsep2 lagu aslinya. One special performance with her dad, Nat King Cole, spt lagu Unforgettable, kembali hadir. Duet yang cuma dimungkinkan lewat tehnologi, seolah bikin Nat King Cole hidup lagi dan bener2 duet dgn anaknya. So this is another must have album for Christmas. enjoy!

Here it is, the album we all are waiting for! Bali Lounge yang terkenal bgt dgn lagunya Something's Wrong, dan melejitkan Tompi, kini hadir lagi. Kali ini Tompi ga ikutan, tapi tidak mengurangi hebatnya album ini. Malah kalo gw bilang, album ini jauh lebih hebat dan variatif. Masih merupakan grup lintas dunia dengan eksplorasi ethnical keren, dibawah komando om Lewis Prasagam. Ada banyak bunyi2an etnik disini,tapi dalam versi yang ga ribet, dan pasti masih dapat dinikmati yang awam jazz sekalipun. Malah lagu terakhir, "Jimbaran Jive", sounds like a Beyonce's typical songs, very bootylicious in the taste of jazz. "Get Happy" nya jg ringan n groovy, mirip2 Bad Day nya Daniel Powter, pasti bakal banyak yg suka. Lagu "Cukup Tak Mengapa", gw yakin bakal jadi hits bentar lagi. Suaranya Irsa Destiwi yg mirip Sheila Madjid bikin lagu ini paling melodis, renyah, lembut dan nikmat buat didengerin berulang2. Pengen yg ethnical? main2 di "Mean Curry", "Free'' atau "Samba Sunda" (Ada Jalu disini, mantan SimakDialog). This is like a crossover between smooth and fusion, so buat yg ga suka fusion gw garansi masih bisa nikmatin album ini. Masuk buat semua kalangan, dan jelas gw rekomen. Ini rip CD ori lowh.. bening, jernih, 192 kbps. So let's give a big applause to the 2nd album of Bali Lounge.

Karrin Allyson - Wild For You

Siapa karrin? Karrin ini penyanyi jazz asal Kansas yang awalnya punya cita2 sbg penyanyi country/folk, spt kebanyakan penyanyi dari Kansas pada umumnya. Tapi ternyata karirnya berjalan bagus di jazz standard, diawali dgn tampil reguler pada sebuah night club milik om nya. Penampilannya disana berbuah kontrak dgn Concord Jazz Records, dan keputusan ini sama sekali ga salah. Karrin punya suara yang, meminjam kutipan bro Dityas, muan... tab! ada nafas folk dalam suaranya (logat Kansasnya kadang masih kedengeran di lagu2nya), tapi diluar itu, dia punya keahlian nge scat yang keren. (dengerin lagu I Can't Say untuk menikmati scat ala Karrin). Untuk album bro Dityas diatas, lagu But I Was Coolnya kocak banget.. hehe.. Buat yg suka standard jazz vocal dgn lafal jelas, strong, bright and clear vocal, you should have Karrin. :)

Who are in it? well, there's Lee Ritenour, Tom Scott, Eric Marienthal, Randy Brecker, Eddie Daniels, Nelson Rangell, Ernie Watts, John Patitucci, Dave Weckl, ARturo Sandoval, David Benoit etc ,including Dave Grusin himself.There are no one superior here, everyone gathered as one powerful band, playing the compositions of John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Dizzy Gillespie or Chick Corea. This is just great!

VA - Blackmamba's Christmas Jazz

First of all, allow me to send my warmest regards to all of you who celebrate Christmas. Gw sadar, dalam segala keterbatasan gw, ucapan tulus dari hati mungkin sulit untuk disampaikan secara langsung. So, i hope this "little gift" could deliver more than words to you.

Ini album khusus christmas jazz yg gw pilih langsung dari koleksi2 gw. Seperti biasa, isinya variatif, ada yg happy, joyful, ada yg romantic and smooth. Artisnya jg beragam. Yang penting, gw sengaja pilihin penyanyi2 yg relatif "muda" (dalam arti bukan dari tahun 30-60 an), karena rasanya christmas compilation with classic and legendary musician udah lumayan banyak dipasaran, dan lebih bisa menjangkau temen2 yg masih muda atau berjiwa muda. Yang pasti, gw pilihin lagu2 yang jadi standar christmas songs, dipadu dgn bbrp lagu ciptaan sendiri dari bbrp musisi yang gw anggap mampu mewakili damai dan syahdunya natal. Asik2? of course, that's my highest priority. Gw berharap album ini bisa menambah keceriaan dan kebahagiaan dalam merayakan natal bersama keluarga.

Louis Armstrong & Friends - What A Wonderful Christmas

Another perfect and masterpiece Christmas album. It's the time to have Mr Louis Armstrong aka Satchmo's version of Christmas. This one is good because:
1. A classic christmas moment with classic album and legendary artist(s). what else can be better than that?
2. In this album, not only you'll have Satchmo, but also his friends, Dinah Washington, Mel Torme, Duke Ellington, Eartha Kitt, Peggy Lee etc. so, not only one, you'll get lotsa legends gathered together and played together in the magic of Christmas.
3. Bringing the joy of christmas back to the glorious swing and new orleans dixieland into your living room in christmas eve is simply breathtaking, and will be unforgettable.
4.This is a remastered album... it's like all these legends still alive and recorded this album just now. Perfect sound quality, thanks to the technology.

No album can be more mellow than this. Gw gambarin gini deh isi album ini.. imagine someone sad and alone, sitting alone in the closed cafe after midnight, pouring everything he felt inside. Yep, itu cukup buat ngegambarin. It's dark, moody n mellow... but still, it's beautiful, sweet and touching at the same time. Album ini direkam live recording tanpa suara2 tepuk tangan atau ocehan2 penonton. Gw rekomen banget album ini buat siapa aja, bahkan buat yg ga suka ama Barry Manilow. Ini album yang beda, bukan spt tipikal lagu2nya Barry Manilow biasa. a simply and truly classic, ga akan pernah ketinggalan jaman. When October Goes, Say No More dan Paradise Cafe adalah lagu2 yg gw jagoin dari sini. All time fav gw tiga2nya. So when you're feeling blue, when you need mellow tunes to set the night off, even when you just need a recording that can make you relax and melt down under your blanket, this one will always be right on the spot. So let's go mellow with Barry at the Paradise Cafe.

Krakatau - 2 Worlds

2 worlds yang dimaksud disini mungkin adalah pertemuan dua dunia antara timur dan barat, bisa juga antara etnik musik dan jazz, tapi buat gw sendiri, gw menggambarkan 2 worlds ini sebagai pertemuan antara real world dan imaginary, mystical and magical world. Belum pernah gw ketemu ethnic fusion yang segila ini. Eksplorasi out of the world yang mungkin akan kedengaran sangat berat bagi pendengar awam, tapi mengagumkan buat yg bisa menikmati ethnic fusion. Improvisasi dan komposisinya bener2 challanging, wild, pushing to the limit of musical performance, technique and sound. Sebagian komposisi dalam album ini sendiri dikerjakan ketika mereka tampil dalam rangkaian konser kelilingnya di Amerika Serikat dan Kanada pada tahun 2005. Dalam kesempatan tersebut, Krakatau juga mengajak beberapa rekan musisi asing dari Kanada, Amerika Serikat dan Italia. Mereka ikut tampil dan berbaur dalam menampilkan kemampuannya. Sepertinya juga mereka mencoba untuk menikmati warna dan groove yang barangkali asing bagi musisi luar. So, there i said it.. not recommended buat yg suka easy listening, unless you wanna try how a two worlds colide would sound like. For you who love ethnic jazz, who love a free exploration and progressivity of jazz music, this one is brilliant and recommended.

Indra Lesmana - Ayahku Sahabatku (1976)

This is an ultimate rare one. Liat covernya, indra masih kecil banget (10 taon)

Alkisah, tahun 1976 di Bandung, orang terpukau melihat jari2 mungil seorang anak yang baru menginjak usia 10 tahun. A star was born. Dilanjutkan dengan penampilan Indra di panggung Taman Ismail Marzuki pada tahun yang sama,j ari-jemarinya yang mungil menggerayangi bilah-bilah tuts piano elektrik Fender Rhodes, mengiringi suara Broery Pesolima. Sang ayah, Jack Lesmana, berada di dekatnya memetik gitar. Ini berakibat munculnya album pertama Indra dalam sejarah, album ini, Ayahku Sahabatku. Album instrumental ini mengagumkan. Siapapun yg dengar, pasti ga nyangka kalau orang yg mencet2 keyboard di album ini adalah anak berusia 10 tahun yang waktu itu belum mendapatkan pendidikan musik formal. Dari sini kisah anak ajaib berlanjut, mendapat beasiswa di australia, membuat serangkaian album yg dgn spektakuler mencapai sukses di Amrik dan seterusnya. Indra was a wonder kid, and will always be someone with very special and gifted talent.

Once again, ini album pertama Indra yang luar biasa. Ada unsur musik anak disini, untuk mewakili usia Indra yang harusnya masih manja2an spt anak2 seumuran lainnya.Tapi secara umum, lagu2nya tampil dalam arena progressive jazz, standard jazz dengan flavor 70 an yg kental.
