No need for introduction i believe... but in case if i need to put some facts of him, he's one of the greatest songwriter of the century, besides singing, playing guitar, keyboards, and also music and movie producer. Kurt Elling - Nightmoves

One of the artist that will perform in Java Jazz 2008 is Kurt Elling. Chicago vocalist Kurt Elling's limber and deep tenor voice is at home in a myriad of idioms, from straight-ahead, Latin, and pop, to poetry, and his wide artistic range is fully reflected in his Concord debut. As in his six previous recordings, his longtime pianist-arranger Laurence Hobgood is at the helm of his trio, with special guests including bassist Christian McBride, Yellowjackets saxophonist Bob Mintzer, and the Escher String Quartet. Building on Jon Hendricks's and Eddie Jefferson's scat-vocalese styles, Elling lyrically caresses and melodically illuminates Michael Franks' title track, jazz diva Betty Carter's angular "Tight," and the rarely-performed Duke Ellington number "I Like the Sunrise." The Guess Who's 1969 rock cut "Undun," surprisingly, comes off, as does the bossa nova "Change Partners/If You Never Come to Me," with its reference to Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Useless Landscape." The question is: what can't he sing? This is just great. Enjoy!

One of the artist that will perform in Java Jazz 2008 is none other than Matt Bianco. Matt Bianco is not a person's name. It's a group with Mark Reily, Danny White and then Mark Fisher replacing Danny White. There's another name that later on started her solo career and successfully made it, her name is Basia. Matt Bianco has a unique music style, combining samba into pop jazz, and really sound fresh, cool and tasty.

Let's say... if there's any retro, flashback kind of songs in one album, but doesn't sound oldfashioned. Nicely picked, can be enjoyed by wide range of listeners. Yep, that's the essence of this album. Very cool and groovy album, very pleasuring and enjoying. The artists are just massive and vary. If you're into nu jazz, there's Montefiori. Acid? Jamiroquai and Incognito, and others are here as well. For bossa lovers, there are Eldissa and Sergio Mendes. Even if you're into jazzy way of hip hoppin, there are Black Eyed Peas and Jurrasic 5. Bill Saragih - Dia Yang Kembali

Dunia musik Indonesia, khususnya dunia jazz kembali kehilangan salah seorang putra terbaiknya baru2 ini. om Bill Amirsjah Rondahaim Saragih akhir januari lalu meninggal dunia akibat stroke dan diabetes yg udah lama dideritanya. Almarhum ini artis serba bisa. Selain dikenal dgn suara beratnya yang sangat mirip dgn Louis Armstrong, dia juga ahli dalam memainkan berbagai alat tiup, seperti suling yang jadi instrumen favoritnya, selain juga piano yang udah nyatu dengan jari jemarinya selama puluhan tahun. Om Bill almarhum sempat bertualang ke luar negeri, mulai dari Bangkok hingga Australia, dimana om Bill ketemu dengan soulmatenya, tante Anna. Om Bill terkenal sangat cinta tanah airnya, terutama tanah batak, dimana dia dilahirkan. Dimanapun, kapanpun, dia tetap tampil membawakan lagu2 batak dengan gayanya yg khas.

Ini album perdana om Bill, waktu baru pulang dari Australia. Kaset keluaran Pramaqua Records (ada yg masih ingat label ini.. anybody? ) ini berisi 10 lagu yg klasik bgt. Dua lagu tapanuli, Anju Au (sayangi aku) dan Nasonang Do Hita Nadua (betapa senangnya kita berdua), ada lagu wajibnya indonesia, kidung dan Lilin Lilin Kecil karya James F Sundah yg populer lewat Chrisye, ada lagu perjuangan Merpati di Tapal Batas, lagu Noerlela karya Bing Slamet (kalo ga salah..), atau Saputangan Dari Bandung Selatan nya Ismail Marzuki (ini jg kalo ga salah). Ada juga lagu sunda, Es Lilin, dalam tiupan suling mautnya om Bill. Lagu Romantika Kehidupan seingat gw karya Janner Sinaga. Satu lagi yg klasik pastinya Anna My Love, lagu buat sang istri tercinta. Romantis abissss.... So, ini album vintage, klasik, another harta karun, yang jelas rare...

Well, ini buat mengenang om Bill. Farewell tulang Bill.. Rest in peace. Semoga om Bill diterima di sisiNya dan beristirahat dalam damai di surga.

Sergio Mendes - Stillness (1971)

Japanese-only CD reissue of this 1971 album by Mendes and Brazil '66, originally released on A&M. On this release, instead of concentrating on transforming recent rock hits, Mendes and his band focused their sights on Folk songs from the recent past including covers of songs written by the likes of Joni Mitchell ('Chelsea Morning') and Stephen Stills ('For What It's Worth' from Stills' days in Buffalo Springfield). Also features 'Righteous Life', 'Sometime In Winter', 'Celebration Of The Sunrise' and more. 10 tracks total.

Sergio Mendes - Arara (1989)

Every time you play this album, the exhuberant music screams Brasil!!!
You can picture yourself walking on Ipanema beach singing Mas Que Nada.
This is your typical Sergio Mendes album (which by typical I mean superb), full of percussions, keyboards, vocal assemblies, and that ability to encapsule what Brasil is in a simple disc. Some classic songs can be found here, like the timeless Mas Que Nada, or Ivan Lins' The Island. Also the song called Acai, that popularized by Gal Costa or originally by Djavan, now appear in English Version. Great album!

This is a perfect album for jazzlovers who like jazz just the way it is with some decorations of bossa rhythm, sax, and piano.
Compared to the previous album of Shuya OKino with the same title, which has a lot of electronic influence, this album is purely jazz.
It is Nu Jazz, Purely Jazz in the modern way. no added electronic or soulfulhouse, that KJM always does.
Highly Recommended album for all of you!!

JavaJazz Discography

Sekumpulan mahluk2 luar biasa di dunia jazz Indonesia, ngumpul jadi satu di tahun 90 an. Ga terlalu banyak yg tau emang, tapi bagi penggemar jazz, karya mereka ini jadi barang yg masih terus dicari2, dan bagi yg udah punya, dua album mereka ini jadi koleksi tak tergantikan. Mereka ini siapa? JavaJazz, grup yg berisi pentolan jazz dalam negeri, para dewa2nya jazz, dalam formasi yang berganti2. Biar berganti2, tetap aja anggota2nya punya idealisme tinggi, dan album ini keluar bukan dalam rangka memenuhi keinginan pasar, tapi wujud dari idealisme tinggi dan penerjemahan kemampuan mereka kedalam nada2 luar biasa dalam bahasa jazz.

Album pertama berisikan Indra Lesmana (keyboard,synth), Embong Raharjo alm (sax), Dewa Budjana (gitar), Cendy Luntungan (drum) dan Jeffrey Tahalele (bass). Album kedua, drum dipegang Gilang Ramadhan dan bass dipegang Mates. Ada juga Donny Suhendra dgn gitar listriknya. Sementara Indra dan Embong, dua jiwa awal dari Java Jazz ini masih tetap setia.

Dua album luar biasa, yang masih langka, sekarang nongol disini. Ada sentuhan2 etnis disini, terutama pada lagu Bulan Diatas Asia, tapi ngga serumit Krakatau 2000, SimakDialog atau jazz2 etnis lain. Indra dkk lebih fokus pada kebebasan bermain, curahan idealisme mereka, sekaligus memberi kebebasan berimprovisasi pada para crew band lainnya. Album pertama itu keluar dalam bentuk dobel kaset, dan sekarang udah langka mampus buat didapat. Album kedua sempat beredar dalam bentuk CD, tapi itu pun udah susah didapat. Sayang album pertama ga dikeluarkan dalam bentuk CD.. Indra sendiri waktu ditanyain kapan album pertama dirilis dalam bentuk CD cuma bilang belum ada rencana. Padahal album sekeren ini... grup sekeren ini, sayang bgt buat dilewatkan.

Ok deh.... yang suka free jazz/progressive/fusion, fans nya Indra, Embong dll, para penggemar musisi2 idealis,kolektor barang langka, silakan dihajar dua2nya. Harta karun lagiiih...

trivia:
-Judul sbenernya untuk album 1 adalah Bulan Di Asia, bukan Bulan Di Atas Asia spt yg banyak disebutin orang.
- ada kerancuan untuk personil band di album 1, karna mereka terus berganti2 personil, bahkan sebelum ngerilis album.
-JavaJazz dan Java Jazz Festival kebetulan pakai nama yg sama, tapi ga ada hubungannya sama sekali.

Benang merah dari Krakatau dengan beberapa personilnya. Sentuhan etnis ala Krakatau masih terasa. Bedanya, kalau di Krakatau etnis mengambil peran penting dalam aransemen dan bunyi2an lewat instrumen2 tradisional, kali ini di album Trie Utami, musik etnis hanya tampil dalam nuansa aransemen dan cengkok2 lincah Trie.

Refreshing bgt, ngeliat Trie Utami kembali tampil fresh dan sensual, baik lewat olah vokal maupun penampilannya di cover. Kalau eneg liat mbak Iie di AFI, album ini langsung ngembaliin image Iie terdahulu, sbg artis serba bisa, lincah dan hot. Album keluaran 2007 ini diaransir Pra Budhidarma, kecuali track 7 oleh Dwiki Dharmawan. Selain mereka berdua, ada campur tangan Budhi Haryono,Yoyon dkk juga disini. Lagu2nya chilling n magical, seolah berasal dari dimensi lain yang biasa diolah krakatau. Sangat gw rekomen buat penggemar etnis jazz, fans nya Krakatau, Trie Utami, Pra B Dharma atau Dwiki, yg suka jazz luas tanpa batas lewat etnomusikologi dalam negeri (jawa), dan yg pengen ganti suasana main2 di dimensi lain.

Arturo Sandoval - Tumbaito

This early solo effort (made available on CD by Messidor) by trumpeter Arturo Sandoval was recorded in Madrid, Spain a few years before his defection from Cuba. Sandoval really lets loose on the six selections (five originals plus "A Night In Tunisia"), showing off his tremendous technique and his ability to play rapid lines. The high-powered music (which also features pianist Hilario Duran and guitarist Jorge Chicoy) may turn some listeners off due to its ferocity and lack of space, but one cannot help but be impressed by Sandoval's talents. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Gerald Veasley - At the Jazz Base! [LIVE] (2005)

Bassist Gerald Veasley's latest is a live recording in his own club in Reading, Pennsylvania known as the “House of the Flying Vee” or known to the public as Gerald Veasley's Jazz Base. It was recorded over a couple of nights last November, and the results are uplifting. His onstage energy comes across in flying colors, and is picked up by the rest of the band. You get the feel from the beginning of a tight jazz club on a weekend night. It had been requested by his fans, and now they have what they wanted.

The mix spreads songs around from six of his discs as well as two new tunes. “Shango” kicks it right off getting the crowd involved from the outset. Everyone's playing together, as Chris Farr's sax solo is a good contrast to the constant driving bass, while Pete Kuzma's keyboard adds a club feel. “Valdez In Country” shows off the bass as a focal point of a driving melody. Farr switches to soprano and doesn't miss a lick. Everyone is happy with “Coupe de Ville.” There's plenty of bass to go around in this crowd favorite. “Sugar Time” picks up the pace and has everyone bopping along. Gerald and Farr play off each other well throughout. It's one of the new tunes brought out for this night, and I know the fans won't be disappointed.

“Forever” leads off with Kuzma's keyboard only to be led in by Veasley's soft bass. This is probably his showcase piece, and he demonstrates to the crowd what has made him so very popular. “On the Fast Track” has everyone playing as one on this up-beat number. Veasley's bass is clean, and the sax part blends well. I especially like the chorus, and it plays the two off each other somewhat. “Bread Puddin'” is the longest number on the disc. It features Veasley throughout, as he is joined by most of his band. There's some great syncopation here, and they hold the line well. “Celebrating Sipho” is the final number, and is one of the new tunes brought out for this disc. It has a “fat” bass feel, and plays well to the playful soprano. This one flows nicely, and will be a welcomed addition to many of Veasley's fans.

If you're in the mood to get out and hear some live jazz, the club can be just as close as your stereo. Pop in a copy of Gerald Veasley's latest, then sit back and relax (but I know you just can't do that!) Be sure to get a good seat, and crank it up. - H.A. Cline

Laura Fygi - Live at Ronnie Scotts (@320)

This is the second live album of Laura since her first one 'Live' at Carre Theatre in Amsterdam back in 1998. This album of her concert at Ronnie Scott's recorded in March last year is the definitive "live" recording of this remarkable Godness in Jazz. It was recorded on the last night of the concert and it captured Laura at her best in live performance without any of the flaws.

Widely regarded as the world's finest Jazz vocalist today, Laura appeared in this recording in which she perfectly makes for excellent listening. It goes without saying the highly standard sound quality, all the new interpretations make this truly inspirational performance very attractive. Easily the most impressive tracks on here are 'That old feeling', 'All of me', 'Don't it make my brown eyes blue', 'I'll wait for you', 'Just of those things' and some previously unreleased tracks like 'Orange coloured sky', 'Diamonds are a girl's best friend' and 'The nearness of you'. No matter what Laura sings be it Portuguese in 'Corcovado', French in 'For me, formidable' and 'Les Feuilles Mortes' or Spanish in 'La mentira' (bonus track in Asian edition and SACD), Laura's sultry voice will definitely makes you stand still and listen. The power, passion and clarity she has is such a rarity and uniqueness that it makes your very soul sing along. There isn't one track on here that is weaker than the next, and the incredible thing is the variation of the songs that Laura glides seamlessly from flawless English to French, Spanish and Portuguese.

Thoughtful interepretations of the American song book has lost absolutely none of its style or genre and Laura reworks some of her most famous tracks in a new slant to provide an utterly brilliant new fantastic jazzy interpretation and weaves tightly with the spiritually of the standards to give those masterpieces a whole new spin.

Michael Bolton - Vintage

After hitting his 50th birthday in February 2003, Michael Bolton took a page from the books of fellow fiftysomethings like Rod Stewart and Robert Palmer and had a go at the great American book of standards. Bolton delivers the goods with an enthusiasm stoked by a childhood surrounded by his mother's recordings of legends like Billie Holiday, Nat "King" Cole, and Louis Armstrong. He tips his hat to these influences by way of delicate readings of "All The Way," "A Kiss to Build a Dream On," and "When I Fall In Love" respectively. Bolton also manages to invoke a touch of restraint on songs normally associated with belted-out interpretations, like the Harry Warren/Mack Gordon classic "At Last." There's even a nod by the gruff-voiced Bolton to hero Ray Charles via the pop-country perennial "You Don't Know Me."
